South of Tahiti are the Austral Islands and their principal island of Rurutu, home to migrating humpback whales. These giants reproduce, calve, and nurse in the warm shallow waters of Rurutu from July to October each year after their journey from Antarctic waters.

Two trips a day are organized by the dive operator which features shallow dives to view the mammals up close. The trips also offer snorkelers the opportunity to witness these gentle giants.
